Robert Genn

1936

GennR_08Robert Genn was born in Victoria, B.C. Canada in 1936. His formal training included the University of Victoria, the University of British Columbia and the Art Center School in Los Angeles, California.

Recognized as one of Canada's foremost painters, his work is well known internationally. While his subjects are universal (he has painted in many countries), he excels in portraying Canada. Renowned for his paintings of the West Coast and Rocky Mountains, he also has a powerful connection to the Canadian Shield country in and around the Whiteshell and Lake of the Woods.  He has visited regularly to sketch in different seasons in order to capture the changing moods of this historic region.  “On Lake of the Woods,” the artist explains, “your eye is drawn to the ancient glaciated rocks that form the design of so many foregrounds.  From between the filtering trees you work yourself back to yet another island (I’m told there are 14,000 of them).  Here the picture plane is crossed and compromised.  What lies beyond is a mystery …. This is a place where so many sketches are to be had for the making.  I’m thankful for this lake of perpetual beauty with its infinity of painterly opportunities.”

Robert's technique includes a tradition of strong design with patterns of color and form, with a pervasive sense of personal style. Grand themes are transposed onto small panels and larger canvasses in a manner similar to members of the Group of Seven.  Most of Robert's current work is in acrylic. He has also done considerable work in oils, watercolour, and silk screen printing.  This display is an exhibition of works painted on and following his most recent trip to area in June of 2008.

Robert Genn has written several books, including the most recent, Love Letters to Art, (2007).  Other works include  the autobiographical book In Praise of Painting, which provides an insight into the progress and trials of a Canadian painter, as well as,  The Dreamway and The Painter's Keys.
