Walter F. R. Tyndale, RI RBI (1855-1943) was a painter of architectural subjects, topographical landscapes, portraits, and genre. Born in Bruges, he came to London when he was sixteen and later studied in Antwerp and Paris. He first worked in oil, painting portraits and genre subjects. Indeed he was best known as a portrait painter until the 1890s. It was at about this time that he moved to Haslemere, Surrey, and under the influence of Claude Hayes and Helen Allingham took up watercolour painting and never painted in oils again. He travelled extensively in Morocco, Egypt, Lebanon, Syria, Italy and Japan, and later lived in Venice. He exhibited widely and illustrated a number of topographical books.
