Vojtech Matousek

(1936 - 2015)

Born in former Czechoslovakia in 1936, Vojtech Matousek dreamed of an art career, but for pragmatic reasons chose engineering as a profession. The proximity to Prague’s museums and galleries, however, offered many opportunities to indulge his love of art and painting, and even as a young engineer with a demanding work schedule, he found time to attend painting classes. After relocating to Canada in 1969, Matousek continued to devote time to pursuing painting as a parallel career, and in 1985 he was finally able to fulfill his lifelong dream to make art his full-time career.

When Matousek arrived in Canada, he embraced its landscape as his own and focused his energies on painting watercolour landscapes. He has now expanded his repertoire to include urban landscape and likes to portray Winnipeg’s working class neighbourhoods, where the simple homes tell their own story. Matousek still enjoys the transparency of watercolour and has developed a signature technique, which is immediately recognizable. He has explored many different mediums over his career, and in recent years has returned to oil. He finds that switching between the two mediums keeps his work fresh.

Vojtech Matousek now lives and works in Winnipeg. His paintings are represented in corporate collections such as Great West Life Assurance Company; the Government of Manitoba; Marusin Corporation, Tokyo; and many private collections in Canada and abroad.
