Richard Bernhardt Louis Friese was born on December 15, 1854 in Gumbinnen, East Prussia. He studied at the Academy of Arts in Berlin until 1880 when he traveled to Norway to further his art studies. Upon his return to Berlin, he assumed the post of professor at the Academy of Arts where he became acquainted with Carl Rungius and Wilhelm Kuhnert. These three artists were early progenitors of a new genre which is today often referred to as wildlife art. His paintings were recognized with awards in 1885, 1886 and 1900. To this day, Friese is considered to be one of the greatest painters of European and Arctic animals. His works are part of museum collections in Berlin, Bremen, and around the world.
