Ruth May Pawson Wanted for Purchase or Consignment

(1908 - 1994)

Born in Stratford, Ontario in 1908, Canadian artist Ruth May Pawson moved to Regina, Saskatchewan, at an early age. She attended the Regina College of Art (c. 1940) where she studied practical art under Augustus Kenderdine and the History of Art and Art Appreciation under Professor Gordon Snelgrove. She graduated with an Associate of Fine Arts degree. Later she attended the Emma Lake Summer School where she did outdoor sketching under Kenderdine (1941, 1942 and 1946) and summer sessions at the Banff School of Fine Arts (1944, 1945 and 1947) under A.Y. Jackson. She became a teacher in elementary schools and also taught a children’s Saturday Morning Class at the Regina College of Art.

Exhibitions of Pawson’s work included a two-woman show at the art gallery, 13th floor of the Saskatchewan Power Corporation in Regina (1970) and the Dunlop Gallery at the Regina Central Library, Regina (1975). In 1976, the Regina Public School Board named an elementary school in her honour. For her varied contributions to the province and Canadian art, Ruth Pawson received the Saskatchewan Order of Merit in 1993. She was Secretary to the Federation of Canadian Artists (Regina Branch) from 1951-1954. She is represented in the permanent collections of the National Gallery of Canada, the Banff School of Fine Arts, the Saskatchewan Arts Board and elsewhere.
