Manly Macdonald
OSA, RCA

1889 - 1971

Manly MacDonald, RCA, OSA, was born at Point Anne in 1889, and received his art education in the United States as well as at the Ontario College of Art. He was a contemporary of the Group of Seven and was best known as "an interpreter of Old Ontario," with his favourite subjects being Ontario landscapes, particularly in the Bay of Quinte and Belleville area. Mr. MacDonald was a commissioned war artist who chronicled the war efforts on the home front. His art is in the collections of many public institutions across Canada and the world, including The McMichael Canadian Art Collection, Agnes Etherington Art Centre, The Robert McLaughlin Gallery, The Art Gallery of Ontario, and The National Gallery of Canada. The largest holdings are at The Canadian War Museum in Ottawa and The Art Gallery of Hamilton. In 1999, Duncan MacDonald donated a collection of his father's work, valued at $1 million, to the Quinte Cultural Centre. The Centre will house these works in the Manly MacDonald Gallery, making them accessible to the public and outstanding opportunity for educational programming.
