Albert J Franck
OSA, RCA
1899 - 1973
|
Born in Middelburg, Holland in 1899, Albert Jacques Franck began to paint after his arrival in Canada in 1926. Early in his career he worked in the Fine Art Department at Simpson's, Toronto, and in 1940 established a picture restoration business. It was not until the 1940s that he came into his own as a fine artist in his own right. From 1947 he held solo exhibitions at Simpson's, Eaton's, Roberts Gallery, Hart House, Galerie Moos, and York University (shows were regularly sold out). He also exhibited with the OSA, RCA, and in public galleries. In addition to his painting he helped to organize exhibitions for fellow-artists at Eaton's Fine Arts in 1950 and 1951 and at the Art Gallery of Toronto in 1952. Franck and his wife Florence were often hosts to progressive Toronto artists such as the "Painters Eleven". He produced oils, watercolours, and drawings, and his subjects were the small streets and back lots of old Toronto. Though often ignored by the critics and art historians of the time, he was the founding father of a whole school of Toronto urban art which was inspired by his artistic success. His work is found in the collection of the AGO and in corporate, private, and public collections in Canada, USA, Great Britain, Netherlands, and world-wide. Albert Franck died in 1973 in Toronto at the age of 74.
