In Pursuit of a National Identity

An Exhibition of Historical Canadian Art

Throughout history, art has played an essential role in the development of cultural identity for people around the world. Over the past year, Mayberry Fine Art has amassed a large group of important historical Canadian paintings which span a 121-year period (1860 - 1981). Compiled for this exhibition entitled In Pursuit of a National Identity, these works provide a glimpse of how fine art evolved in our own country and reflects how we define ourselves as Canadians.

From the middle of the 19th Century, the work of artists like Cornelius Krieghoff and William Brymner began to celebrate a uniquely Canadian culture and landscape. In a time when the public and critics alike still favoured European subjects, later artists like J.W. Beatty emphasized the importance of painting Canadian wilderness. This movement gained momentum, eventually leading to a truly Canadian art style brought to full flower by The Group of Seven. The Group and their contemporaries were instrumental in helping the Canadian public to recognize the value of home-grown art.

As the scope of art in Canada grew, mid-century artists like Jean-Paul Riopelle finally set Canadian art on the international stage. The work of these pioneering artists has had an extraordinary influence on how we view ourselves as a nation and how, in turn, we are viewed by the greater world around us.
