Fine Art Portraits and Commissions By Peter Garland
His formal training began at the age of 15 at the internationally acclaimed Three Schools of Art in Toronto. Later, he attended the Ontario College of Art and then further enhanced his training, studying with Michael John Angel (an apprentice to the world famous portrait painter Annigoni). With training steeped in the traditions of painting dating back to the renaissance, his style blends the rich subtleties of that era with a more modern flamboyance. Early Canadian experiences include the well known Toronto City Hall Summer Show, and the Etobicoke Annual Art Show where he won The People's Choice Award. A portrait commission of John Turner, former Canadian prime minister, was another highlight at that time. In the UK, he established himself as a leading Portrait and Fine Artist, (including many equestrian commissions) and also gained experience lecturing through involvement with art societies. His portrait commissions range from well known personalities to aristocracy and politicians. Notable clients include: Dick Francis (world renowned author); Lord Carnarvon, racing manager to Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother; Sir Eric Parker, chairman of Trafalgar House Construction; Bishop John Jukes; and Regiments of the Royal Artillery . One of his more memorable commissions, for Lord Hartington (an equestrian portrait) now hangs alongside a Van Dyke at his estate in England. |

In addition to his portrait work, Peter Garland has recreated historical masterworks by such noted Canadian painters as Lawren Harris, Arthur Lismer and A.J. Casson. These are large intricate works, inspired by great artists of history. |
