Hashim Hannoon: Recent Paintings

August 5th, 2010 :: Features

We are pleased to welcome artist Hashim Hannoon to our Winnipeg Square satellite space for the month of August.

Recently relocated to Winnipeg, distinguished Iraqi painter, Hashim Hannoon, is today faced with the opportunity and the challenge of introducing his work to a Canadian audience.  After experiencing some of the horrors of war, he and his family moved to Jordan, where Hannoon was free to develop himself as an artist.

Wherever he lives, Hannoon seeks to achieve contact with the spiritual existence of a place.  Since his move to Winnipeg, that city has become a subject in his canvases.  He is not, however, concerned with painting a literal portrait of a place, but rather in painting his own relationship to that place.  This process results in abstract images of gentle beauty, which invite the viewer to experience what he has experienced, through the filter of his imagination.  Although born from tragedy of war, the paintings of Hashim Hannoon radiate vitality and optimism.

Meghan Hildebrand: Rivers and Logs

July 14th, 2010 :: Features

We are pleased to announce that artist Meghan Hildebrand will be featured in our Winnipeg Square satellite space for the month of July.

Meghan Hildebrand was born in the Yukon, and went on to study art in Nelson BC, and Halifax, Nova Scotia. Over the past 10 years, Meghan’s work has changed from simple and squarely structural to what could be described as landscape-exploded.  Local scenery becomes the stage where her personal symbols have come to mingle and converse.  Animal ghosts happily inhabit our ruins.  Trees take root below basements, offering cities to the sky.

Painting Wilderness

June 2nd, 2010 :: Features
We are happy to welcome artist Robert Genn into our Winnipeg Square satellite space to usher in the summer months. The exhibition will continue for the month of June.
Recognized as one of Canada’s foremost painters, his work is well known internationally. While his subjects are universal (he has painted in many countries), he excels in portraying Canada. Renowned for his paintings of the West Coast and Rocky Mountains, he also has a powerful connection to the Canadian Shield country in and around the Whiteshell and Lake of the Woods.  He has visited regularly to sketch in different seasons in order to capture the changing moods of this historic region.  ”On Lake of the Woods,” the artist explains, “your eye is drawn to the ancient glaciated rocks that form the design of so many foregrounds.  From between the filtering trees you work yourself back to yet another island (I’m told there are 14,000 of them).  Here the picture plane is crossed and compromised.  What lies beyond is a mystery …. This is a place where so many sketches are to be had for the making.  I’m thankful for this lake of perpetual beauty with its infinity of painterly opportunities.”

Peter McConvilleLandscape painting has been Peter’s focus for the last several years. While he was recovering in hospital from a recent illness, Peter could look out his window onto the Red River set against the backdrop of Winnipeg’s skyline. To Peter, rivers, in their varied moods, represent a metaphor for the seasons of life. This is the inspiration for his latest series of work.
