While he was recovering in hospital from a recent illness, Peter could look out his window onto the Red River set against the backdrop of Winnipeg's skyline. To Peter, rivers, in their varied moods, represent a metaphor for the seasons of life. This is the inspiration for his latest series of work.

Mayberry Fine Art is pleased to present the following video on Winnipeg artist Peter McConville. Watch the video below to get to know the man behind the paintings as McConville speaks about the role his life experiences have played in the evolution of his art — from his decision to escape the violence in his homeland of Northern Ireland, to the heartwrenching loss of his daughter to cancer, and his own recent recovery from the disease.

Be sure to visit our satellite space in Winnipeg Square to check out new artist Sara Robichaud's work in the month of May. She has taught at the University of Victoria, the Surrey Art Gallery and currently teaches at the Vancouver Island School of Art. Sara is also the Golden working artist for Vancouver Mainland and Vancouver Island.

Her artistic practice is rooted in abstract expressionism and involves process- based way of working. Her paintings engage the viewer in a visual inquiry between the atmospheric and lyrical qualities of the form and the hard physicality of their material.

Mayberry Fine Art is pleased to announce that April will be a fun and eventful month at the gallery. Artist Terry Watkinson will be featured in the Winnipeg Square satellite space from April 1st till the 30th.

Terry's paintings incorporate many of his life experiences starting with his Thunder Bay childhood; which, bonded him to the Canadian north. He also draws structure, precision, draftsmanship, and the science of perspective from his architectural studies. Terry's musical background translates to rhythm, gesture, and communication in his paintings.

Chris Dorosz will be featured in our main space for the month of April. Chris lives and works out of San Francisco. While teaching and managing a gallery space, he continues to develop himself as a highly conceptual painter. He is influenced by the primacy of the paint drop in relation to the smallest building blocks of the human body (DNA).

Also in March : Objects of Desire by Sara Genn

Featured in our Winnipeg Square exhibition space are works by Canadian artist Sara Genn. Born in Vancouver, British Columbia, Genn attended York House School in Vancouver and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Queen’s University in Kingston,Ontario. She has been showing her work professionally since the age of 18, and sold out her first solo exhibition at the age of 19. Genn is best known for her exhaustive use of colour and patterning, and repetition of motifs in her paintings. Her work often blurs the line between high art and craft and references other artforms such as quiltmaking and textile design.

Annual exhibition of major Canadian paintings of the 19th and 20th centuries

Nov 14 - Nov 30, 2009

It is with great pleasure that we present our annual exhibition of major Canadian paintings of the 19th and 20th centuries. This year's collection represents a cross-section of some of Canada's greatest artists of the past. Each was a creative force, instrumental in shaping the visual arts milieu of their own time. Their contribution continues to influence the art world as we know it today.

Wilf Perreault was born in Albertville in 1947. His formal training began at the University of Saskatchewan, where his concern for representational painting was at odds with the New York style abstraction dominant at that time in Saskatchewan. During this time he encountered the landscape paintings of Reta Cowley and Dorothy Knowles, whose expressive play with light in the landscape became a strong influence. After graduating with his BFA in 1970 and a BEd in 1971, and moved to Regina to teach art. There, his explorations of his new city became linked with his search for a subject matter. Perreault rejected conventional landscape views, becoming fascinated instead with the complex vistas to be found in the back lanes of the inner city. These hidden landscapes have sustained his interest throughout his career, providing an ongoing challenge to his skills in creating works that capture the play of light and reflection, evoking a human context that saturates his work with a sense of place.

Since the 1980s Perreault has worked full-time as an artist, exploring various subject matters such as portraits, while never abandoning his fascination with back lanes. He has participated in solo and group exhibitions throughout Canada and the United States, and in 1989 was chosen to be one of five artists representing Canada in Les Jeux de la Francophonie in Morocco, where he won the Silver Medal. Perreault’s work can be found in public, private and corporate collections throughout North America.
