"The dichotomy of different worlds, cultures and lifestyles Haskova has experienced are reflected in the divisive, compelling style of her paintings. They show sections of sharply defined images contrasted by abstraction and blocks of colour that nod to cubist techniques. One can argue that [her] paintings break the rules or that they break new ground" - Ingrid C. King, 'Magazine Art'

A fascination with the world of art began at an early age for Nikol Haskova. Born in the former Czechoslovakia, she remembers sketching on the edges of newspapers when no other material was available. Sketching, painting, poetry and acting were her childhood passions. Nikol and her family escaped the formerly oppressed Czechoslovakia in 1987 and resettled in Vancouver. This dramatic change had an incredible impact on the young artist providing her the opportunity to observe worlds outside of her own world, that of politics, spirituality and the strength of the human spirit.  These observations would later influence her artwork.

Frequently visiting art exhibitions and galleries, young Nikol was exposed early to engaging subject matter.  She attended exhibits ranging from the old masters in the museums of Prague to often controversial local artists' presentations. She was encouraged to question the artwork in order to better appreciate the emotional effect it has on the viewer. Over time, these experiences helped her to develop a unique style of her own. Abandoning traditional methods of painting, she has found her own way to communicate through her art. Her work often omits certain details, hoping to stir up questions about her paintings.
