Nell Bradshaw was born, 1904, in California. The family moved to Canada in 1913. She took art classes from H.C. Gyde and Molly Bobak at the Victoria Art Gallery, but was largely self-taught. Although she had a strong desire to paint, she did not begin painting on a full-time basis until the death of her husband in 1964. Within a year she had painted 80 works. Her totem pole paintings, painted on location, became known world-wide. She painted the poles as they stood at the time, weatherbeaten and decaying.
In addition to her totem paintings, she also favoured still life and abstract subject matter. She is also known for her woodblock prints and collages. She died in 1997.
