Maud Lewis was born in Nova Scotia in 1903. Subsequent to suffering from polio as a child, Lewis lived her life with crippled arms and deformed hands. Despite her physical disabilities she started drawing after her marriage to Everett Lewis in 1921, and later began to paint, adding colour to her outlines.

Described as a Folk Artist, Lewis painted small pieces using oil paints, never mixing colours. Her subject matter is based on the outdoors including horses, cats, or teams of oxen.
