The figure makes a return as a subject in this painting concept titled Era. When I came across an old dilapidated barn driving from Swan River, Manitoba to Winnipeg in the winter of 2006, it struck me as an excellent symbol of an end of an era when times were simpler in the context of human evolution. When we consider the current state of our planet, over-population, political unrest and our dependency on technology, the contemporary human being must cope with the stresses from these ever present realities. Gone are the days when living off the fat of the land was the rule and filling up your '57 Chevy was cheap. The world has become smaller now and resources are being depleted since the times when my grandparents were young. Borrowing from a Greek style of portraying the figure, I felt having this woman clutching a cell phone with an image of icebergs in the screen and gazing at the barn creates an interesting platform for discussion.
