Bill Boyd
Bill Boyd currently lives and works with his wife Shao Fang on the beautiful Galiano Island in the Southern Outer Gulf Islands of British Columbia, Canada.
He first came into contact with pottery making in Sweden where he was attending art school in 1970. Those initial moments would influence his future path as an artist. From there he went on to establish "Solbacken Ceramics" with Bettan in a seaside village in south-west Sweden. Along with his partner he produced earthenware, gas fired stoneware and wood fired stoneware in kilns designed and built by Boyd. During his 11 years in this practice he met and worked with several talented and successful potters, including Geoff Savage and Kenneth Williamson.
Bill Boyd was originally influenced by the Scandinavian aesthetic which favours simplicity and clean lines. His exposure to the work and writings of Shoji Hamada, Soetsu Yanagi and Bernard Leach also led him toward an Asian styling including classic historical glazes such as celadon, tenmoku, chun, shino and others. In 2002, Bill discovered the elusive fractal technique of zinc- silicate crystal glazing. This method of glazing would become an obsession and he continues to pursue this style today.
