Painting Wilderness

June 2nd, 2010 :: Features
We are happy to welcome artist Robert Genn into our Winnipeg Square satellite space to usher in the summer months. The exhibition will continue for the month of June.
Recognized as one of Canada’s foremost painters, his work is well known internationally. While his subjects are universal (he has painted in many countries), he excels in portraying Canada. Renowned for his paintings of the West Coast and Rocky Mountains, he also has a powerful connection to the Canadian Shield country in and around the Whiteshell and Lake of the Woods.  He has visited regularly to sketch in different seasons in order to capture the changing moods of this historic region.  ”On Lake of the Woods,” the artist explains, “your eye is drawn to the ancient glaciated rocks that form the design of so many foregrounds.  From between the filtering trees you work yourself back to yet another island (I’m told there are 14,000 of them).  Here the picture plane is crossed and compromised.  What lies beyond is a mystery …. This is a place where so many sketches are to be had for the making.  I’m thankful for this lake of perpetual beauty with its infinity of painterly opportunities.”
